What is the best diet of Yoga practitioners? That is the question that most of the Yoga newbie ask me. You should know that people who practice Yoga need to eat and drink in moderation; if not, no matter how smart you are, you will not succeed. Diet is the perfect complement To yoga exercises. Eating right doesn't just help you have good health but also helps you to control your weight, reduce excess weight and maintain a healthy body because it eliminates junk from the diet and keeps only what is needed. So what to eat and how to diet to achieve the best Yoga performance? Below is 8 things you should know about Yogic Diet. Let's get started.
1. What is Yogic Diet?
The Yogic diet is a balanced diet that the ancient Yogis believed had a significant impact not only on physical health but also on our mental health. This diet can also be called vegetarian-milk, meaning it is made up of non-animal foods and foods made from milk or honey.
When you have become a yogi for a long enough period, you can gradually realize that vegetarian food becomes a natural choice. It can also help you maintain a soothing, energetic feeling. You can decide that your love for every living creature will far exceed your need for animal food. Non-animal foods can help you achieve higher levels of spirituality by generating more positive energy.
Many people believe that it is difficult to switch to a non-animal diet. What you need to remember is that you should not eat meat and fish at the same time. But you can gradually reduce these foods from your diet. Cut back on red meat first, then slowly eliminate it from your diet. When you find other vegetarian meals that you like, you can also give up poultry and fish. Eating the right foods is very important in achieving a healthy balance in your body and mind.
2. A yogic diet should be Sattvic
In the yoga literature, the food that is good for us is said to be Sattvic. Sattvic foods form an ideal diet, keeping the body nourished while easily digested. They create new energy, clarity, and a bright, calm mind, allowing us to use all our mental, physical and mental abilities. Sattvic foods include whole grains, fresh fruits, and vegetables, milk, butter, nuts, seeds, lentils, rice, cereals, and honey.
3. A yogic diet should be free of chemicals and stimulants.
I recommend staying away from caffeine, cigarettes, alcohol, and artificial sweeteners. The unhealthy food that can upset our physical or emotional balance is called Tamasic and Rajasic. If you consume too many of these foods, you may become restless, agitated, and distracted, make you more challenging to focus on meditation.
4. Try to fast
Fasting is deliberately not eating for a while. Some of the health benefits of fasting include:
· Lose your weight
· Increase fat burning
· Lower sugar levels and blood insulin
· Help reverse type 2 diabetes
· Help improve mental clarity and focus
· Help increase energy
· Increase growth hormone, at least in the short term
· Help you live longer
Yogis should choose one day of the week to fast. Fasting can be strict, not allowing you to eat anything until sunset. Or you can drink water and eat fruit. No matter which type of fasting you choose, remember that your fast goal is to purify your body and mind.
Do not apply fasting in people with exhaustion, malnutrition, anemia, advanced cancer, tuberculosis, AIDS, people with type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent group), liver, heart, severe kidney, lower hyperglycemia, acute cases ... Do not apply to children, pregnant women, and nursing mothers.
5. Eat slowly and chew thoroughly
Many people eat their food quickly and carelessly. This can lead to weight gain and other health problems. Eating slowly can be a much smarter approach, as it can provide some benefits like:
· Eating slowly helps you eat less
· Help you lose weight
· Help you enjoy the full flavor of the dish
· Help your stomach work less
· Help you avoid stress
6. Drink water
70% of your body is water. Your body needs water for many activities, such as digesting nutrients and nourishing your entire body. You should drink fruit juices, soy milk, salted lemon water, and squeeze fresh lemon mixed with a little salt in addition to water.
However, it would help if you only drank a maximum of 2 liters of water a day. Because drinking too much water can make your body lack sodium, potassium in the blood and make your cells swell, which is extremely dangerous to your life.
7. Do not overeat
You should eat meals apart from one day. Eat only half a stomach at a time, while one-fourth of the stomach contains water, and one-fourth of the stomach contains gas and steam. Such eating will help you digest better. If necessary, you can eat many meals a day. It would help if you did not eat too late at night or eat before going to bed.
8. Practice ahiṃsā
Ahiṃsā is an important principle of life among the three major religions in India, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. The term ahiṃsā, meaning not to kill or hurt other beings. Ahiṃsā also says not to use violence, not to create conflict, not to harm others, neither suicidal nor self-injurious.
Remember that small, seemingly insignificant changes in the way you eat and live can be of great significance. Above all, remember that you are a god (or goddess), and your body is a temple! Keep your food choices simple, pure, fresh, and use your best judgment. You are the one who understands the best.
